So, last week I signed up for a commercial email host, because I was unsatisfied with GoDaddy’s email services. They seemed pretty competent. I talked with sales, and they sent me a quote, and I purchased it.
Unfortunately, the catch-all email address support was, for some reason, broken. In the control panel I have the option to specify an email address to which all email sent to invalid addresses is forwarded to, a “catch-all” account. But mail, rather than being forwarded, was being bounced. It took a few days and conversations with tech support, but eventually they got it working.
Woo!
Well, I just ran into some nonsense while at the fiancĂ©e’s parents’ place. Apparently Verizon is redirecting DNS failures to their own search page. Yeah, same stupid crap that Verisign did, and got smacked down for. This means I have to reconfigure my laptop for when I am over here.
This isn’t too hard, though. I just created a location for Oakmere, and set myself to use manual configuration. I still use the default gateway, but I use 4.2.2.2 as the only DNS server. God, I hate it when companies screw with DNS.
Oh well. At least I can get around it. It’s just a pain in the ass.
ECNet, along with all the other servers that use the TravisBSD servers, are still down. Kuh-Raizee. No INTP Central, no ECNet, no TravisBSD, nothing. It’s been almost 24 hours. What is Heero thinking?
Well, yesterday Lauren bought a VCR to DVD converter at Costco. I hooked it up today. The damn thing has hilariously badly written software. It requires an administrator to install it, which makes sense. But, it only works for the same user that installed it. When I installed it as “Administrator”, I couldn’t get it to capture video under “Lauren”. I had to uninstall it and reinstall under Lauren for it to work. Finicky indeed.
Oh well. It seems to work reasonably well, at least as far as I have been able to test it. I’m still recording a VHS tape, “The Time Machine”. Once it’s done, I’ll try the encoding and burning.
Well, I bought myself one of my graduation presents. It’s a digital picture frame that I got at WalMart for $150. It is 8 inches diagonally, and has an 800×600 resolution. That’s pretty sweet. Also, it hides two unsightly power splitters and a plethora of transformer blocks.

I called Apple support, and they are sending me a new battery. I’ve still ordered the new one, so now I will have 2 batteries. This is not a bad thing; I’ve wanted to have two batteries for a while now. I plan to keep this laptop around for as long a time as I can, and in a couple years it will probably be devilishly difficult to procure a new battery for it.
Apple support was very helpful. :)
