Use of backpack

May 31st, 2008

I have decided that, rather than the laptop bag, I am going to use my backpack for transporting around the laptop and my work documents. It makes things a fair bit easier.

Work work work

May 28th, 2008

Well, I finished day 2 at my job. There has been a lot of learning. I spent basically all day puzzling over documents concerning a project that I am involved with. Several hours just trying to understand what the project actually was, and then a couple more looking at source code. Figuring out source code I have never seen before is not easy.

On top of that, when I got home I decided that I would sync my phone and my Outlook calendar for work. I figured that would be rather convenient. Lo and behold, though, when I synced it suddenly all of my appointments vanished! I sent out two emails requesting re-invitations to meetings before I found that I could re-accept some meeting requests that had ended up in the trash can. Eventually I got them back, but had it not been for the fact that there were basically only about 4 of them to lose in the first place, I would have been screwed.

Oh well. And I thought Missing Sync was crappy synchronization software. Microsoft, you have taken the cake. ActiveSync is truly horrendous.

UPDATE:

I still don’t have a phone. :(

Verizon DNS troubles

May 26th, 2008

Well, I just ran into some nonsense while at the fiancĂ©e’s parents’ place. Apparently Verizon is redirecting DNS failures to their own search page. Yeah, same stupid crap that Verisign did, and got smacked down for. This means I have to reconfigure my laptop for when I am over here.

This isn’t too hard, though. I just created a location for Oakmere, and set myself to use manual configuration. I still use the default gateway, but I use 4.2.2.2 as the only DNS server. God, I hate it when companies screw with DNS.

Oh well. At least I can get around it. It’s just a pain in the ass.

ECNet is -still- down

May 26th, 2008

ECNet, along with all the other servers that use the TravisBSD servers, are still down. Kuh-Raizee. No INTP Central, no ECNet, no TravisBSD, nothing. It’s been almost 24 hours. What is Heero thinking?

VCR Transcription

May 24th, 2008

Well, yesterday Lauren bought a VCR to DVD converter at Costco. I hooked it up today. The damn thing has hilariously badly written software. It requires an administrator to install it, which makes sense. But, it only works for the same user that installed it. When I installed it as “Administrator”, I couldn’t get it to capture video under “Lauren”. I had to uninstall it and reinstall under Lauren for it to work. Finicky indeed.

Oh well. It seems to work reasonably well, at least as far as I have been able to test it. I’m still recording a VHS tape, “The Time Machine”. Once it’s done, I’ll try the encoding and burning.

Poor man’s briefcase

May 20th, 2008

I just bought a briefcase at Office Depot. Technically it is a 3-ring binder with handles and lots of pockets, but it’s basically a vinyl fake-leather briefcase, Samsonite of origin. It cost me a whopping $40, and I plan to use it to hold my employment papers. For now, it holds all of my relevant paperwork, and I will be bringing it with me on my first day. I may find out that I don’t need it, and if that’s the case, not much is lost. On the other hand, I’d much rather have an extra briefcase than none at all.

Digital picture frame

May 18th, 2008

Well, I bought myself one of my graduation presents. It’s a digital picture frame that I got at WalMart for $150. It is 8 inches diagonally, and has an 800×600 resolution. That’s pretty sweet. Also, it hides two unsightly power splitters and a plethora of transformer blocks.

Graduation & Gifts

May 17th, 2008

Well, I officially graduated today. I have a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, awarded cum laude. I found out that that means “with honors”, for which I am pleased. Very pleased.

We had a graduation party this afternoon for Lauren and me. It was a 4 hour open-house event, with relatives and some family friends. I got a pretty good take in graduation gifts, too. Counting gift cards, and a check that was mailed to me by my grandfather, I got $525 of graduation gifts. I am flabbergasted. Cool, though.

I also got what is now a family heirloom. My mother said that her mother told her that though there were medals for athletics, there were none for academics, so she gave my mother a largish solid gold coin as a medal. Today my mother gave it to me. Pretty cool.
