New Phone For The Win!

December 28th, 2007

I ordered on Christmas a Samsung SCH-i760, a PDA smartphone, to be my primary gift on which to spend my Christmas monies. It arrived yesterday, and it is pretty awesome. There are some things that I wish it could do that it doesn’t, and it’s not perfect, but it’s certainly better than having to carry around two separate devices.

Anyways, I’m enamored by the thing. It’s awesome.

No more grades…

December 24th, 2007

I still haven’t gotten my CS306 grade. It’s been 11 days. I suppose the teacher has an excuse, though. Apparently she had a baby, which has complicated the grading process, on Dec 19. She says they should be in within a week. Hopefully that will be before Christmas, so I can brag about my awesomeness to relatives. Oh well.

More grades

December 20th, 2007

I’m now only waiting on one grade, my one for CS306, the computer ethics and law class. So far I have two As, two Bs, and an A+. I am -very- pleased with myself this semester, even if I got my first B in a CS class. Oh well. Here’s the breakdown so far:

CS 421, Software Req/Design Modeling: B

CS450, Database Concepts: A

CS483, Analysis of Algorithms: A

Math446, Numerical Analysis I: A+

Prob/Stat-Engr/Scient I: B

Final Exam

December 17th, 2007

I just got out of my last exam for the semester, Numerical Methods. I did well on it; there was nothing that was challenging. In addition, I was checking my answers with my calculator as I went, and caught a lot of errors that I would have missed otherwise.

But, this is my last exam. The semester is over. For the first time since the beginning of Spring 2007’s semester, I have a hunk of free time larger than a week. I feel a bit lost. I kind of want to just keep on going; I was in the groove.

Oh well. More school to come, I’ll just have to wait for it. And I’ve got my projects to occupy myself.

Grades

December 16th, 2007

Two grades in so far. I got a B in statistics, which is a little disappointing. I didn’t do as well on the final as I had expected I would have done, though. Oh well, a B isn’t all that bad. I got an A in algorithms, which I thought would be one of my harder subjects. So overall I’m pretty pleased.

Time Machine, LaunchServices, and Application Duplicates

December 13th, 2007

So I was getting pretty annoyed at my computer, because when I right-clicked on a file and went to the “Open with…” menu, applications (MS Word in particular) were getting listed TWICE. It took me damn near an hour to find a fix, but I got it.

The issue stems from there existing multiple copies of an application: the normal copy, and the copy sitting in the Time Machine backup. LaunchServices, the system responsible for keeping track of what applications handle what files, was seeing these duplicates in addition to the originals. The fix was to rebuild the LaunchServices database, which I learned to do here.

I made an applescript application to do it for me, and stuck it in my personal Applications folder. Since running it, all has been well.

Results from the Algorithms exam

December 12th, 2007

The teacher for Algorithms emailed us saying that the grades were pretty good, and that he would email our grades to us individually. I got this in my inbox:

Hi Robin,

Your score is 96/100. You have 25 bonus points. You get the highest score in the class. Congratulations!

[NAME REMOVED]

This makes me smile like a fiend. Highest score in the class, 96 plus 25 bonus points equals 121, which is right up with what I was expecting. I used to be worried I’d get a C in this class. No more. This semester seems to be shaping up pretty well.

Exams 1 and 2

December 11th, 2007

So I just got back from Mason, having taken first my Statistics exam and then my Algorithms exam. In Statistics, I did okay. I forgot what the Method of Moments and Maximum Likelihood estimators were, which was 20 out of a possible 124 or so points. I figure I got at least a B though. And even if I got a C, my other tests are so high that I still expect at least a B in the class.

Algorithms was the one I thought was going to be difficult. I got something like a 72 on my midterm. I’ve been getting consistent Bs and As on my homework, though. Anyways, the exam had 25 extra-credit points in addition to the 100 quota, for a total possible 125 out of 100 points. I aced that sucker. I did all of the problems, and I feel quite confident in my solutions. Very confident. I expect at least a 120 on that. So it sounds like I’ll get that A in algorithms after all.
